The Bolthole - Romantic wood cabin in a spectacular Lochside setting | Cabin in Dalmally

1 Bedroom Cabin in Dalmally
The Bolthole is an artist designed cabin with utterly spellbinding views down Loch Awe.
It is an off grid, furnished and very cosy cabin which sleeps 2 in a double bed.
Relax by the woodburning stove, boil a cup of tea in the whistling kettle while you watch the birds, or walk 80m to the loch to wild swim, fish, read in one of the hammocks or have a barbecue.
Lie out on dark evenings to watch the stars, enjoy the silence and escape from the demands of the modern world..
The Bolthole sits in an elevated position above Loch Awe on a working farm in a field that most of the year has cattle and or sheep in it as well. There is one other cabin 100m away and a pier on the loch side that is used by the owners and other guests at times. There is no access to the general public so the majority of the time it will be yours alone.
The Bolthole has tongue and groove walls that are constructed from 45mm logs, the wood is milled from slow grown sustainably grown Northern Spruce timber. There are 3 double glazed windows facing the loch in all directions.
Bring waterproof shoes/boots as there are great walks in the hills around and always bogs and burns to be crossed. If there has been heavy rain there can be muddy patches on the track too.
Cooking is done either on the top of the woodburner, or on a barbeque outside the Bolthole or on a stone barbecue by the shore. There is a large outdoor dining table by the Bolthole and also seats down by the pier
The Bolthole has a woodburner, candle lanterns, twinkling fairy lights powered by a power bank, table and chairs, comfy sofa, various kitchen utensils, pots and pans. It has books, cards, games and plenty space to paint, read or cook basic meals. All linen and towels are provided. The Bolthole is off grid, there is no running water to it or shower facilities, apart from jumping in the loch with a bar of soap. There is a room at the farm with running water, tumble dryer, fridge, washing machine available 24/7
There are two hammocks provided which attach to four large hooks on the pier. You need to walk out 10m into the loch to get to these, the idea being once you are in the hammock you are suspended over approx a foot of water.
There is a compost separating toilet adjacent to the Bolthole - the main rule is Men sit down at all times - and a basin outside by the water butt. There is no shower
We provide a starter basket of wood and kindling for the woodburner and recommend the dried sawdust type logs or peat that you can buy in slabs from garages if you need more. Logs bought in garages are often too big for the stoves and/or not dry enough.
There is space to park your car 20m from the Bolthole when there are no cattle in the field and a space that is fenced in 50m away if there are cattle in the field.
If your car is low to the ground the track may not be suitable and in this case please leave your car up at the farmhouse in this case and walk down.
Please also make sure not to walk amongst the cattle especially when they have calves at foot. The field is a couple of miles long so this is always possible.
We are approximately 1 1/2 hours drive from Glasgow and 2 1/2 from Edinburgh. Inveraray is the last opportunity to shop at a supermarket (Coop) though Dalmally and Lochawe village both have good village shops 3 miles away.
You will receive directions & what3words reference to the Bolthole 2 days before you arrive and how to locate the key.
Arriving by car is essential, although some guests do arrive by bicycle and others by boat which they leave tied to our pier for the duration of their stay. There are no Ubers or taxis in the area, so if you arrive by train there is a 4 mile walk which we do not recommend.
Argyll is the most beautiful place in the world and the views from the Bolthole are out of this world and change all the time, but please bear in mind there are days it rains, days it is windy, days where there are midges and days the sun can burn you very easily. Please be prepared for all 4 in a day. In winter the nights draw in early - in summer it hardly gets dark at all.
Please ask me any questions you may still have though I hope I have covered everything.
The Neighbourhood.
The hut sits in a totally unspoilt part of the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It is surrounded by a working farm, with one other cabin in the field 100m away. The field is covered in bog myrtle (the plant they use in midge repellant), wild cotton, celandine and orchids in the summer and foragers can find rowan, blackberries, mushrooms, sloes, sorrel etc at other times.
There is a resident eagle and a pair of ospreys that come back each year that are a delight to watch as they fish in the bay below.
The area is a rural and secluded predominantly farming community, and the perfect base from which to explore the mountains, lochs, historic castles and ruins of ancient stone circles. There are 7 castles on the loch itself.
It is a designated area of outstanding beauty and the hill above a Site of Scientific Interest. You can see the stars at night and hear little more than the birds and the train that rumbles along the West Highland Line 3 times a day the other side of the loch. The Old Military road runs from the farm up to the monument in Dalmally (no cars on it) and is a great walk with a picnic to see the views out to the Isle of Mull. There is an excellent restaurant and pub in Lochawe (Cruachan Inn). The George pub in Inveraray has won many awards and is essential dining.
We can give you recommendations of places to go that are on and off the beaten track.
Fishing from the shore in the field is free provided you ask me for a permission slip as landowner. If you fish from a boat you will need a permit available locally or on Lochawe.net
